New England Spring Retreat

MYSTICAL TALES

A Spring Retreat Sponsored by

The New England Great Books Council

Wisdom House, Litchfield, CT April 27-29, 2018

Looking forward to having you join us for our annual Spring Retreat at Wisdom House. This year’s theme is Mystical Tales with the readings focused on supernatural and extraordinary personal and social experiences that defy ordinary mortal existence.

White Noise by Don DeLillo – A professor of Hitler Studies confronts his ongoing day-to-day existence when an airborne toxic event unmasks what drives his fellow man, including himself.

Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie – a mystically based novel grounded in contemporary Indian history that provides a panoramic view of India’s origins and search for cultural identity.

Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus – A classic Greek tragedy in which Prometheus defies the gods by gifting fire to the human race, resulting in his permanent banishment and torture + Prometheus Unbound by Percy Bysshe Shelley – a play that sequences the original Greek tragedy with Prometheus released from enslavement. (The two works are considered together in one session.)

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde – An Adonis-like young man sells his soul to achieve eternal youth by having his portrait accurately present his life changes while he remains permanently young.

Wisdom House is an interfaith retreat and conference center on 70 country acres in the foothills of the Berkshires in Northwest Connecticut. The area is a splendid representation of New England countryside charms. For details see www.wisdomhouse.org. The bedrooms are dormitory-style with shared bathrooms and offer delightful country vistas. Delicious healthy meals are prepared by a chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate dietary requests, and refrigerators are available for any food items your special diet requires. Alcoholic beverages are not provided by Wisdom House, thus it’s strictly BYOB.

The cost per person for the Spring Retreat is $390.00 single occupancy, $350.00 double, and includes 2 nights’ accommodations, 6 meals, books and group discussions, and our social festivities. Commuter rates are available for those who would rather stay at a local inn or B&B.
