JOIN THE DISCUSSION

On Friday night, we will discuss Selected Lyrics by Bob Dylan, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

We then highlight three modern women whose exquisite writings have become canonical.

Saturday begins with Penelope Fitzgerald’s The Beginning of SpringSet in 1913 Moscow, it tells the story of a Moscow-born son of a British emigre manufacturer, Frank Reid, whose wife on the eve of the Revolution returns to England, leaving him to raise their three young children alone.

On Saturday afternoon we will turn our focus to Elizabeth Bowen’s The House in Paris. Set in France and Great Britain following World War I, its action takes place on a single February day in a house in Paris. An artful and psychologically acute novel, it’s a timeless masterpiece of nuance and construction.

Sunday morning, we address Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin. Awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2000 and the Hammett Prize in 2001, Time magazine has included it in its list of the 100 greatest English-language novels since 1923. It’s a novel-within-a-novel, or more accurately, a story told within a novel within a novel. This complex interweaving of multiple narratives draws the reader forward through a dramatic and turbulent tale of love, betrayal, and death, while simultaneously using its structural puzzles to reconsider the act of storytelling itself.
